Protecting Historical Resources
Thimble Peak Telecommunications Project | Alpine County, CA
In 2008, LSA conducted a cultural resources study in support of environmental review for the Thimble Peak Telecommunications Project, near Kirkwood, Alpine County. The study consisted of archival research, consultation with potentially interested parties (including tribes and historical societies), coordination with U.S. Forest Service technical staff, eligibility evaluations, and field survey. Because the project area was in the Eldorado National Forest, the study addressed the requirements of 36 CFR Part 800, the regulations that implement Section 106. LSA’s field surveys identified historical petroglyphs, a prehistoric archaeological site, and a segment of the historical Carson Emigrant trail.
LSA recommended that the sites be assumed significant and avoided by project impacts to expedite environmental review. The sites were recorded on California Department of Parks and Recreation form 523 records. The study concluded that no historic properties would be subject to direct or indirect adverse effects as a result of the project, and no further study was recommended.
